Make It Easy on your CPA

Tax season…it's not fun. At least, that's the stereotype. Not to mention, those accounting fees aren't cheap! And for good reason. The accountants in your life—your bookkeeper and CPA alike—carry a level of responsibility in ensuring your financial records are accurately represented before the IRS. That's a big deal.

Your CPA's job is to prepare an accurate tax return—not spend hours in the minutiae sorting through uncategorized transactions, missing receipts, or duplicate entries. Here are a few practical tips to make life easier for your CPA (and, not to mention, less expensive for you).

  • Categorize and reconcile every month. Waiting until tax season only creates more work and increases the chance of errors.

  • Don't mix personal and business expenses. Keeping them separate makes everyone's job easier.

  • Save receipts and documentation for major purchases. Your CPA may need them, and it's much easier to have them ready than search for them later.

  • Point out major purchases to your CPA. If you bought a vehicle, equipment, or made another significant purchase, don't make them find it—bring it up.

  • Respond promptly to emails or texts. A quick response can keep your return moving and eliminate unnecessary back-and-forth.

Good bookkeeping benefits everyone involved. Your CPA can spend less time cleaning up your books and more time doing what they're trained to do: preparing an accurate return.

A little organization throughout the year goes a long way.
